Medmerry Managed Realignment Nearby
2013
In 2013, the Environment Agency completed the Medmerry managed realignment scheme on the coast between Pagham and Selsey, creating a large area of new coastal habitat by deliberately breaching the sea wall and allowing the sea to flood low-lying farmland. The scheme was designed to reduce flood risk to Selsey and the surrounding area while creating new intertidal habitat. Medmerry was the largest managed realignment on the open coast in England and attracted national attention. For Pagham, the scheme demonstrated the shifting approach to coastal management in the area, moving from hard defence to working with natural processes.
