Parking in Pagham

Where to park in and around the village

Parking in Pagham is largely on-street or on private driveways. The village does not have a public car park in the conventional sense, and visitors to the harbour, the beach and the church rely on informal parking areas and roadside spaces.

The main parking areas for visitors to Pagham Harbour are at the access points around the harbour edge. There is a small car park near the harbour on the Pagham side, used by walkers and birdwatchers. The RSPB visitor centre at Sidlesham, on the western side of the harbour, has its own car park for visitors. These parking areas can fill up on busy weekends, particularly during the winter birdwatching season and on fine summer days.

At Pagham Beach, parking is limited to a handful of spaces at the end of Sea Lane and Beach Road. There is no formal beach car park, and visitors who find the spaces full have to park further back in the residential streets. During fine weather, parking pressure near the beach can cause friction with residents whose streets become congested with visitors' vehicles.

The Lamb Inn has its own car park for customers, and the village hall has limited parking for events. The church has a small parking area used by churchgoers and visitors. On-street parking in the residential areas of Pagham is generally straightforward outside peak times, though the narrower lanes can become congested when cars are parked on both sides.

For those heading to Bognor Regis, the town has several public car parks and on-street parking. The supermarket car parks at Tesco, Lidl and Aldi provide free parking for shoppers. Bognor Regis railway station has a car park, though spaces are in demand during the working week.

Parking enforcement in Pagham is light, as the village does not have parking meters or controlled zones. However, residents are expected to park considerately, particularly on the narrower lanes where parked cars can obstruct access for emergency vehicles and refuse collection trucks.

The parking situation at the harbour has been a recurring topic of discussion. On popular weekends, particularly during the winter birdwatching season and on fine summer days, the small harbour car park fills quickly and visitors park along the adjacent roads, causing congestion and frustration for residents. Proposals for a larger harbour car park have been discussed but not implemented, partly due to concerns about the environmental impact of increased vehicle access to the nature reserve.

For residents, the parking situation within the village is generally manageable. Most properties have off-street parking in the form of driveways or garages, and on-street parking is rarely contested outside the harbour area and the beach access roads. The village does not have parking meters, controlled parking zones or residents' parking permits, and the informal arrangements that govern parking in Pagham reflect the low-key, community-based approach to village management.

The question of electric vehicle charging is beginning to arise in Pagham. As more residents switch to electric cars, the need for charging infrastructure grows. Most EV owners charge at home using a wall-mounted charger, but the absence of public charging points in the village means that visitors with electric cars cannot top up during a harbour walk or a beach visit. Public charging points in Bognor Regis and Chichester serve the wider area.
